Project Objectives


Mothers and Daughters of

Mothers and Daughters of the Spanish Transition
 to Democracy is a digital archive of audiovisual materials that serves the following purposes:

  • to document, via first-person accounts, the transformation of women's roles during the complex sociopolitical and cultural evolution of Spain in the second half of the 20th century;
  • to provide information on the strategies of Spanish women to promote and support social and political changes, and to resist or adapt to them;
  • to illustrate and support the use of digital humanities data in research;
  • to contribute to the understanding of oral history as a research methodology.

The Interviews: Life Stories



The archive currently holds fifty-one life stories of women from Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, the Basque Country and Valencia. Participants are Spanish women born before 1955, and their daughters, born between 1950 and 1980. The first interviews were conducted in February 2012. The project continues to expand with new life stories and related materials.

Viewing the Interviews




  • Website visitors may access the interviews by topic, search by keyword or watch the full interviews in the Chronology section, where they can also search by birth year or by interview code.
  • Visitors may also view full interviews by clicking "Complete" at the bottom of the video window. The topics that the interview addresses may be seen in "Descriptors".
  • All interview excerpts on the same topic will appear at the bottom of the video frame.
  • Transcripts and summaries of the interviews can also be accessed from the video frame.
  • The "Share" function sends interview excerpts by email.
